Tarnya Smith MP is your local State Member for Mount Ommaney and the Assistant Minister for Child Safety.
Raised in rural New South Wales, Tarnya developed a strong sense of community that has stayed with her.
Tarnya has completed studies in Industrial Relations at Griffith University.
Coupled with this qualification and Tarnya’s extensive professional background Tarnya went on to work within the Mater Hospital as an Industrial Relations Advisor. In 2003 Tarnya and her husband Steve commenced their own business that was built around supplying quality meat to restaurants, clubs and hotels and in 2007 they expanded in to retail and opened an award winning butcher shop servicing the South-Western Suburbs of Brisbane.
Tarnya was motivated to run for State Parliament to address the challenges her community faced. Commitment, common sense and a good work ethic are all character strengths that Tarnya possess. Since being elected in 2012 she has been a passionate advocate for the electorate of Mount Ommaney, caring for her constituents’ wellbeing and supporting local businesses.
“I believe that in order to build a strong Queensland economy we must support our small businesses and let business get on with what they do best, with minimal Government interference. Red tape and duplication was a high source of frustration for me as a business owner and that is why I support the LNP Government’s initiative to cut red tape.”
As the Assistant Minister for Child Safety and a mother of three (3), Tarnya knows how precious and vulnerable our children are, and is working her hardest to ensure that Queensland is the safest place for children in the country.
As a local, Tarnya is actively involved in local community organisations, such as; The Probus Club of Mount Ommaney Inc, The Rotary Club of Sumner Park Inc. and The Rotary Club of Centenary Inc. Tarnya is also an Associate Member of the Lions Club of Jindalee, Friends of Kiwanis Club Inc, an Associate Member of Western Districts Baseball Club and an Associate Member of the WASPS Rugby Union Club Inc.
Tarnya is a supporter of the Arts and particularly enjoys musicals. With a strong interest in War time history, Tarnya appreciates taking time out to read World War I and World War II literature Tarnya takes great interest in sports and enjoys swimming, tennis and fishing. Tarnya is also a great home cook that delights in trying new cuisines.
